As this academic year comes close to completion, our 8th graders writers are not showing any signs of slowing down! Currently, we are crafting our last major writing piece -- our editorials. There is nothing but passion piercing through the pages. These writing pieces include numerous persuasive techniques in order to convince the audience or raise awareness on issues that matter most to us. Check out your child’s draft with a keen eye for their use of statistics and facts, personal anecdotes, hypothetical situations, repetition, events from the news, interviews, expert opinions, and rhetorical questions. Once a final draft is produced, students will share their thinking by going public online on “Blogger” and in a small group setting.

We are approaching the end of our study of evolution. As we move into late May students will be completing their Biomimicry projects, presenting them to their classmates at RAUC and presenting at the Harvard science showcase on May 25th. All 8th graders in Cambridge will be will have the opportunity to attend the science showcase. This gives them a forum to practice their presentation skills and to learn from their peers around the city. RAUC 8th graders will complete their evolution unit with a review of the content and a final exam in the coming weeks.

Now that our math MCAS is completed we will focus on strengthening our understanding of earlier skills through some review and smaller in-class projects. Students will take a final exam on 8th grade standards over a two day period (Wednesday, May 30 & Thursday, May 31). Be sure to ask your student what their favorite math topic they learned this year is and why. This ties in directly with the reflecting they completed last week.

In preparation for the trip to Washington DC, students are watching and reflecting on
America: The Story of US. This overview of United States history is helpful for all students!
