Equity Update: Science at RAUC & community partnerships
Posted on 02/14/2023

At RAUC, an essential part of our equity work is ensuring that rich and engaging academic material and opportunities are accessible for everyone. In Cambridge, a biotech hub, we are privileged to have many STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) resources. This month, students have had several opportunities to engage with these resources through our community partnerships. See below to read more! We’re grateful to help pilot these engaging field experiences in Science for our district!

6th grade students learn about brain research at MIT
Recently, the 6th grade visited the McGovern Institute for Brain Research and MIT Museum.

  • During this “field experience,” students interacted with a wide variety of neuroscientists and researchers that work to better understand the nervous system.
  • They had the opportunity to view actual brains, see human brain activity through an MRI, learn from MIT scholars about brain-computer interfaces (BCI), and design their own BCIs!
  • These activities connected directly with the current unit on human body systems!

7th Grade Netpals Meet & Greet at Meta/Facebook & Draper Labs
Last Friday, Draper Labs and META/Facebook invited our students to see the work they do at their companies and enjoy a pizza lunch.

  • The two hour visit was part of the NetPals program that pairs students with real-life mentors who work in tech, biotech, engineering, or research.
  • This program is run as part of the seventh grade science curriculum.
  • This was the first time our students met their NetPal mentor! They will have other chances in the next few months!
  • If you would like to know more about the NetPals program here at RAUC please contact Mr. Mahoney at [email protected]
