About the poems: Students recently finished reading selections from
Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice, a nonfiction account of the 15 year-old girl who protested giving up her seat on a Montgomery bus months before Rosa Parks. To conclude the unit, students wrote tribute poems to the civil rights pioneer. They were asked to use figurative and rhyme, and include facts about Claudette and her motivation. Students were offered extra credit to reproduce their writing as a physical poem, and all were posted on and beside the bulletin board.
