We are beginning our fourth unit of the year with ancient Egypt! Students will investigate the civilization by considering these two essential questions: How do historians and archaeologists learn about ancient Egypt? How did the Nile shape ancient Egypt? This week students will be creating dramatization skits about the daily life of ancient Egyptian people. Ask your students “how did social class affect daily life in ancient Egypt? Also be on the lookout for the Mesopotamia newsletter this week.

Sixth grade science scholars are almost done investigating Earth’s Story. We are in the middle of an exciting lesson set because it brings all of what students have learned in this unit together. They review what they have figured out so far (compiled in a class chart), then learn about and model the parts of the system that drive change on Earth (all fueled via convection by energy from the Earth’s interior): diverging boundaries, converging boundaries, and transform boundaries. Ask your budding scientist about what events can happen along different types of plate boundaries.

During the next few weeks students will wrap up our work with positive and negative numbers on the number line and dip our toes into the world of data and statistics. MCAS will take place on Tuesday, May 7th and Wednesday, May 8th. Optional MCAS prep sessions are still running on Wednesday mornings from 8:00 am - 8:40 am and Thursday afternoons from 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm. This is a great chance for students to build confidence and learn some test-taking strategies. After MCAS we will return to some of the ideas learned in the Data & Statistics Unit to create surveys and gather information about our classmates! Ask your student how to calculate the average number of hours each person in your household sleeps per night, or the average number of hours they spend on homework per week. Towards the end of the month we will introduce the culminating project of the year. Students will be given opportunities to connect ideas across several units and bring their creative side to mathematics.

As we happily look back on ELA MCAS in the rear-view mirror, we shift back into creative writing with This I Believe essays. Students will determine a personal story from their lives and describe how that experience either helped them form or change their belief. We’ll focus on writing craft and revising strategies and will build to a final share of essays that parents will be invited to. It’s always a powerful event. Don’t forget that students should be well on their way to completing the required 15-25 books this year. Some may have do a late-year push to reach that mark!
